چکیده

By WANCHAT THEERANAEW In this paper, a new form of surface-based deformable image registration is developed for use in image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) of breast cancer patients. A special laser scanner is used to obtain inter-fraction 3D images of the target volume, with 3-4 fixed landmarks located at the rigid base of the breast. By comparing the image-ofthe-day with the initial-fraction image, a rigid-body registration is first performed on the landmarks to correct the patient set-up position. This is then followed by a surface comparison scheme to estimate the extent of deformity of the target volume. In this paper, deformity is represented by the distance between the two surfaces. With the surface images stored as triangular meshes, deformity is determined as the collection of distances from the centers of triangular meshes of a surface to their respective closest triangular pieces of another surface. A ray-to-triangle intersection algorithm is used in the distance calculation, and a neighborhood-search technique is devised to substantially increase the calculation speed while maintaining the accuracy. Experimental measurements using phantoms were used to test the accuracy and speed of the overall image registration scheme. Preliminary results indicate that the proposed system is fast and accurate suitable for further adaptation for clinical application.

Evaluation of deformable image registration in HDR gynecological brachytherapy

Introduction: In brachytherapy, as in external radiotherapy, image-guidance plays an important role. For GYN treatments it is standard to acquire at least CT images and preferably MR images prior to each treatment and to calculate the dose of the day on each set of images. Then, the dose to the target and to the organs at risk (OAR) is calculated with worst case scenario from I...

Application of Different methods for Reducing Radiation Dose to Breast during MDCT

The increased use of computed tomography (CT) and its high radiation dose have led to great concerns about its potential for radiation induced cancer risks. Breast is a radiosensitive tissue based on tissue weighting factors assigned by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). Moreover, the dose is maximal on the surface of the patient. Therefore, strategies should be tak...

Deformable registration using edge‐preserving scale space for adaptive image‐guided radiation therapy

Incorporating of daily cone-beam computer tomography (CBCT) image into online radiation therapy process can achieve adaptive image-guided radiation therapy (AIGRT). Registration of planning CT (PCT) and daily CBCT are the key issues in this process. In our work, a new multiscale deformable registration method is proposed by combining edge-preserving scale space with the multilevel free-form def...

Measuring the photon and thermal neutron dose values of contralateral breast surface undergone breast cancer radiation therapy

This research aimed to measure the received photon and thermal neutron doses to contralateral breast (CB) surface in breast cancer radiation therapy for different field sizes in presence of dynamic and physical wedges. The photon and thermal neutron doses were measured by thermo uminescent dosimeter (TLDs) chips for 11 × 13, 11 × 17 and 11 × 21 cm2 field sizes in presence of physical and dynamic ...
